Qualified Human Editors

Jurnal Penelitian recognizes the increasing role of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and AI-assisted technologies in academic research, manuscript preparation, peer review, and scholarly publishing.

Generative AI tools, including large language models and other AI-assisted applications, can support selected scholarly activities. However, their use also raises important questions concerning originality, accuracy, transparency, accountability, copyright, confidentiality, and research integrity.

This policy establishes the journal's requirements concerning the responsible use of AI tools by authors, reviewers, and editorial personnel. It is informed by recognized guidance from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and relevant scholarly publishing policies and practices.

The journal supports responsible technological innovation while maintaining that scientific reasoning, professional judgment, ethical accountability, and editorial decisions remain the responsibility of qualified human individuals.

1. Use of AI Tools by Authors

Authors may use AI-assisted tools during manuscript preparation when such use is transparent, responsible, ethical, and consistent with the journal's publication requirements.

Permitted assistance may include language editing, grammar improvement, readability enhancement, translation, reference formatting, and other appropriate supporting activities.

AI-assisted technologies must not replace the authors' original intellectual contribution, scientific reasoning, critical analysis, or interpretation of research findings.

Authors remain fully responsible for evaluating, verifying, editing, and approving all content prepared or modified with the assistance of AI.

1.1. AI Authorship

AI tools and AI-assisted systems cannot be listed as authors or co-authors under any circumstances.

Authorship requires intellectual contribution, the ability to approve the final manuscript, responsibility for the accuracy and integrity of the work, and accountability for the published research.

Because AI systems cannot fulfill these responsibilities, all listed authors must be human individuals who satisfy the journal's authorship requirements.

Core Principle

AI may support selected research and writing activities, but it cannot replace human scholarly judgment, authorship, or responsibility for the final work.

2. Disclosure of AI Use

Authors must disclose the use of AI or AI-assisted tools during manuscript preparation and related research activities, in accordance with the journal's existing transparency requirements.

Disclosure applies to relevant uses such as language editing, grammar improvement, text generation, translation, image-related applications, data analysis, coding assistance, and other AI-supported activities.

The disclosure should identify:

  • The name of the AI tool or system used.
  • The version of the tool, where available.
  • The purpose and nature of its use.
  • The manuscript component or research activity supported by the tool, where relevant.

2.1. Disclosure During Double-Blind Peer Review

Jurnal Penelitian applies a double-blind peer-review process. Accordingly, disclosure of AI use must not compromise the anonymity of authors during manuscript review.

At initial submission, authors should provide the required AI disclosure through the separate title page or a confidential communication to the editorial office using the journal's submission system.

An AI-use statement may also appear in the anonymized manuscript when it contains no author names, institutional details, identifying acknowledgments, or other information that could compromise double-blind review.

The editorial office is responsible for ensuring that confidential author-identifying information is not unnecessarily disclosed to reviewers.

2.2. Disclosure in the Final Published Article

Following manuscript acceptance, the required AI-use statement should be included in the Acknowledgments section of the final article, consistent with the journal's established AI disclosure policy.

Authors must ensure that the final disclosure accurately reflects how AI-assisted tools were used in the preparation or development of the work.

2.3. Examples of AI Disclosure

Example A — Language Editing

During manuscript preparation, the authors used [AI tool name, version] to improve language clarity and readability. All suggested changes were reviewed and verified by the authors, who retain full responsibility for the final manuscript.

Example B — Coding Assistance

The authors used [AI tool name, version] to assist with selected programming tasks during data preparation. The resulting code and analytical outputs were independently checked and validated by the authors.

These examples are illustrative. Authors must provide statements that accurately describe their actual use of AI and must not make disclosures for activities that did not occur.

2.4. No AI Use

Authors who did not use AI tools in manuscript preparation are not required to provide a declaration of non-use.

If authors prefer to declare this explicitly, they may include the following optional statement:

The authors affirm that no artificial intelligence (AI) tools were used in the writing, analysis, or preparation of this manuscript.

Failure to disclose relevant AI use may constitute a breach of publication ethics and may result in appropriate editorial action.

3. Generative AI in Figures, Images, and Artwork

Jurnal Penelitian does not permit the use of generative AI or AI-assisted tools to create or alter images in submitted manuscripts, except under the specific circumstances described in this policy.

Prohibited image manipulation may include generating, introducing, removing, moving, obscuring, or materially altering features within an image or figure in ways that could affect the authenticity or interpretation of the content.

3.1. Permitted Basic Image Adjustments

Conventional adjustments to brightness, contrast, or color balance may be acceptable when they do not obscure, eliminate, fabricate, or misrepresent information present in the original image.

The journal may use image forensics tools or specialized software to assess suspected image irregularities when appropriate.

3.2. Exception for Research Design and Methods

An exception may apply when AI-assisted image generation, processing, or interpretation forms an integral component of the research design or methodology.

Examples include research that uses AI-based imaging methods to generate, process, analyze, or interpret underlying research data.

In such cases, authors must describe the use of AI in the Methods section with sufficient detail to support transparency and reproducibility.

The methodological description should include, where relevant:

  • The purpose of AI use within the research methodology.
  • The name and type of AI model, software, or tool.
  • Model version, software version, and extension numbers where applicable.
  • The manufacturer or developer of the relevant tool.
  • The procedures used to generate, modify, analyze, or interpret images.
  • Information necessary to evaluate the reliability and reproducibility of the method.

Authors must comply with the applicable software usage conditions and provide appropriate attribution for relevant materials.

The editorial office may request original or pre-AI-adjusted images, underlying data, or composite source files when needed to assess the authenticity or integrity of submitted research materials.

3.3. Graphical Abstracts and Artwork

The use of generative AI or AI-assisted tools to produce artwork for submitted manuscripts, including graphical abstracts, is not permitted under the journal's existing policy.

3.4. Exception for Cover Art

Generative AI may be used for the production of cover art in certain circumstances, subject to prior permission from the journal editor and publisher.

Authors must demonstrate that all necessary rights and permissions have been secured and ensure appropriate attribution of the materials used.

This exception applies specifically to approved cover artwork and does not automatically authorize the creation of manuscript figures or graphical abstracts using generative AI.

Important Restriction

Disclosure of AI use alone does not make otherwise prohibited AI-generated images or artwork permissible. The relevant exception and associated requirements must also be satisfied.

4. Author Responsibility and Accountability

Authors remain fully accountable for the scientific accuracy, originality, validity, ethical compliance, and overall integrity of submitted manuscripts, regardless of whether AI tools were used.

All AI-assisted outputs must be critically evaluated and verified before inclusion in a manuscript.

Authors must take appropriate measures to identify and correct:

  • Fabricated or inaccurate references and citations.
  • Incorrect scientific statements or unsupported conclusions.
  • Misleading or biased interpretations of research findings.
  • Plagiarized, improperly attributed, or copyrighted material used without permission.
  • Fabricated, falsified, or otherwise misrepresented research data.
  • Errors in AI-assisted coding, calculations, or analytical outputs.

Manuscripts generated entirely or predominantly by AI without adequate human scholarly oversight or required disclosure may constitute unethical publication practices.

Authors must not present AI-generated content as independently verified scientific evidence when the necessary verification has not been conducted.

AI assistance does not exempt authors from complying with the journal's policies on authorship, plagiarism, copyright, research ethics, and data integrity.

5. Use of AI in Peer Review

Peer reviewers are expected to evaluate submitted manuscripts independently and objectively, using their own scholarly knowledge, expertise, and professional judgment.

Manuscripts under review, supplementary materials, research data, editorial correspondence, and unpublished findings are confidential.

Reviewers must not upload confidential manuscript content to AI platforms or external AI services without explicit editorial authorization.

Reviewers must not use generative AI tools to produce peer-review assessments in place of their own independent scholarly evaluation.

5.1. Limited Non-Content Assistance

AI-assisted tools may be considered for limited non-content activities, such as grammar improvement or language refinement of a review report, provided that manuscript confidentiality is fully maintained.

Reviewers who use such assistance must disclose its use to the editor and must ensure that confidential manuscript material is not exposed to unauthorized AI systems.

5.2. Reviewer Accountability

Reviewers remain personally responsible for the accuracy, fairness, confidentiality, and scientific quality of their review reports.

The editorial office reserves the right to reject or disregard review reports produced through inappropriate or undisclosed use of AI tools.

These requirements apply in conjunction with the journal's Peer Review Process and Publication Ethics Policy .

6. Editorial Use of AI

Editorial personnel may use appropriate AI-assisted tools for selected administrative and technical support activities.

Such activities may include similarity screening, formatting assessment, language assistance, and other non-decision-making tasks, where permitted by the journal's procedures.

Editors must protect confidential manuscript materials and avoid disclosing unpublished information to unauthorized AI services.

AI systems must not make manuscript acceptance or rejection decisions.

Editorial assessment, management of research integrity concerns, reviewer selection, and publication decisions remain under the responsibility of qualified human editors.

Consistent with the journal's editorial governance, the Editor-in-Chief retains final responsibility for acceptance and rejection decisions, with appropriate delegation and management of conflicts of interest.

7. Ethical Considerations and Bias Prevention

The use of AI-assisted technologies must not compromise scholarly integrity, fairness, transparency, accuracy, or respect for the rights of individuals involved in research and publishing.

Authors, reviewers, and editors should remain aware that AI-generated outputs may contain inaccuracies, inappropriate assumptions, cultural or contextual bias, misleading information, or offensive material.

Users of AI tools must critically assess their outputs and avoid relying on them as substitutes for independent academic judgment or appropriate methodological verification.

Special care is required when AI-assisted systems are used in activities involving personal data, confidential research information, human participants, or safety-sensitive subjects.

AI-generated or AI-assisted material must not be used to misrepresent research participants, fabricate evidence, introduce discriminatory interpretations, or undermine the credibility of scientific findings.

8. Violations and Consequences

Inappropriate, misleading, or undisclosed use of AI tools may constitute a violation of the journal's publication ethics requirements.

Examples of potential violations include:

  • Presenting substantial AI-generated content as original human scholarship without appropriate disclosure.
  • Using AI tools to fabricate or falsify research data or findings.
  • Submitting fabricated references, citations, or scientific claims generated by AI.
